CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Dr. Nirav Shah is running for Governor of Maine. He is a proven public health leader, attorney, and economist with deep experience serving Maine. As Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, he led the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and later served as Principal Deputy Director at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, demonstrating a commitment to science-based decision-making and protecting community well-being. Shah is running for governor to tackle Maine’s biggest challenges — from affordable housing and accessible health care to food security and economic growth — with a focus on evidence-driven solutions that safeguard both public health and the environment. Shah believes that a healthy environment is intrinsically linked to healthier communities and a stronger economy, including clean air, clean water, and resilience to climate impacts as part of broader efforts to protect Maine’s way of life. Building on his record of clear communication and crisis leadership, he aims to support sustainable policies that reduce environmental risks and expand clean-energy opportunities while ensuring Maine’s natural resources are preserved for future generations.
