CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Hannah Pingree is running for Governor of Maine. She grew up on the island of North Haven where the lessons she learned there have followed throughout her career, as she has built coalitions to get real results for Maine.

In 2008, she made history as the youngest woman in the nation — and only the second woman ever in Maine — to be elected to be Speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.

In the Legislature, she expanded access to health care, defended reproductive rights, passed marriage equality, safeguarded Maine’s working waterfronts, and passed landmark legislation protecting children from toxic chemicals in toys and everyday products.

When she left the Legislature, she continued to serve, joining her local school board while running a small business and raising two young children. In 2019, Governor Janet Mills asked Hannah to lead the new Office of Policy Innovation and the Future. There, Hannah led efforts to address climate change, increase the supply and affordability of housing, and strengthen the economy and workforce for future generations.
