CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Representative Melanie Stansbury is running for her second term to represent New Mexico's 1st Congressional District. Stansbury has spent her life working on community development and natural resource issues, including working with state, local, tribal, and non-profit organizations. She won her seat in the New Mexico House in 2018, after upsetting an anti-conservation Republican in District 28, a swing seat in the Albuquerque suburbs. As a state representative, Stansbury has established herself as the leading voice in New Mexico water policy, and sponsored HB 233 (signed into law in March 2020) to modernize New Mexico's electric grid to be more efficient and responsive as more renewable energy resources come online. Representative Stansbury has earned an impressive 100% lifetime score on LCV's National Environmental Scorecard. Representative Stansbury is endorsed by LCV Action Fund and NRDC Action Fund.
