Candidate Background

Representative Steve Cohen is running for his 10th term representing Tennessee’s 9th congressional district.  He has been a strong environmental advocate, actively opposing the Keystone XL Pipeline and advocating for renewable energy investments. He has consistently supported comprehensive climate action and introduced the 10 Million Solar Roofs Act of 2010 to dramatically increase the country's investment in residential solar technologies. Cohen has also cosponsored the FRAC Act, which would repeal the harmful exemption for hydraulic fracturing in the Safe Drinking Water Act. Cohen has been a public servant for decades.Prior to his time in Congress, he served as a Shelby County Commissioner and spent 24 years in the Tennessee State Senate. Cohen co-sponsored the Climate Solutions Act of 2015 and the Saving America’s Pollinators Act of 2015. Cohen has been a champion for environmental issues for over a decade. Cohen is an active member of the Sustainable Energy & Environment Caucus (SEEC) and has earned an excellent 97% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
