CANDIDATE BACKGROUND
Sheldon Whitehouse is running for a fifth term representing Rhode Island in the U.S Senate. Whitehouse previously served as state Attorney General and U.S. Attorney. Whitehouse is a dedicated environmental champion and as the top Democrat on the Budget Committee, has been bringing much-needed attention to the climate crisis. Among other efforts, he has been a vocal advocate for increasing energy efficiency in public housing, developing more renewable energy sources, protecting our coastlines and marine habitats, including Narragansett Bay.
Whitehouse has fiercely advocated for solutions to the climate problem (many enacted as part of the Inflation Reduction Act), and for investments in preparing communities for the effects we’ve already baked in (many included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law). He’s taking on the fossil fuel industry and its dark-money apparatus, warning of the looming economic dangers, fighting to protect our oceans, and leading the effort to charge big polluters for their emissions -- the surest path to climate safety. Additionally, he created the National Oceans and Coastal Security Fund to prepare our coastline for rising seas, storm surge, and other climate change risks. Since 2016, Congress has provided $113 million in funding. Since 2012, Whitehouse has given over 300 floor speeches on climate as part of his "Time to Wake Up" campaign and in the Senate and will continue to lead on to the urgent need for action on climate change. Senator Whitehouse has earned a lifetime score of 98% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
