Candidate Background

Lateefah Simon is running to represent California’s 12th Congressional District. She has spent her career serving Californians as an organizer for social and racial justice and is a nationally recognized civil rights advocate. In 2016, Lateefah Simon became president of the Akonadi Foundation, an Oakland-based racial justice organization.

Lateefah Simon is the current Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Board of Directors President. She ran and won on a platform of promoting transportation justice, including working to make the public system more affordable, equitable and sustainable, including working to disincentivize users from driving to BART stations. Under her leadership, BART is committed to working with the Governor’s Climate Action Plan for Transportation Infrastructure and prioritizing equity and reducing climate impacts on communities of color and low-wealth communities. If elected to Congress, she will continue to work towards investing in clean energy and transportation justice. Simon is endorsed by LCV Action Fund.
