CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Ben Ray Luján is currently serving his first term to represent New Mexico in the U.S. Senate. Prior to serving in the U.S. Senate, he served six terms representing the 3rd Congressional District.. Luján previously served as Chair of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, where he worked to create a renewable portfolio standard and expand clean energy production. A member of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition and chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’ Task Force on Green Economy and Renewable Energy, he introduced numerous pieces of legislation that would promote solar energy and provide job training for clean energy jobs. 

Luján has been a longtime champion of climate action and environmental justice. He spearheaded the introduction of the Revive Economic Growth and Reclaim Orphaned Wells (REGROW) Act, which was signed into law in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to provide almost $5 billion to clean up and remediate abandoned gas and oil wells that can leak methane and contaminate groundwater. He is a longtime champion of the Land Water Conservation Fund, led the effort to protect Chaco Canyon, and introduced legislation to create Tribal Wildlife Corridors. He has fought for long overdue justice for those Americans who were exposed to radiation due to our nuclear weapons program during the cold War. In Congress, Luján will continue fighting to protect public lands in New Mexico, including the Rio Grande Del Norte National Conservation Area.
