Forever Chemicals
PFAS chemicals (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a class of thousands of toxic, persistent, and widely used man-made chemicals that pose a serious threat to our health. They are found in our drinking water, soil, and food. They come from firefighting foam and everyday consumer products like stain-resistant furniture and carpeting, clothing, food wrappers, and non-stick cookware. Even at low-levels, PFAS chemicals are linked to cancers, auto-immune disorders, low birth weight, thyroid disorders, hormone problems, and more.
As more and more communities find toxic PFAS chemicals in their drinking water, food, and incorporated into their everyday life, the federal government needs to establish safeguards under our bedrock environmental laws that will protect our health and the environment from these dangerous chemicals. Ultimately, polluters who have known the dangers of these chemicals for decades must be held responsible for the costs to taxpayers and the harm they have caused families for generations.
