Candidate Background
Representative Steny Hoyer was first elected to represent Maryland's 5th Congressional District after a special election in 1981. Prior to serving in Congress, he spent 11 years in the Maryland State Senate and was the youngest Senate President in state history. Hoyer has served as the House Majority Leader since 2019 when Democrats took control of the chamber. A strong supporter of protecting our environment and fighting climate, he is helping lead the fight to create a clean energy economy and reduce carbon pollution. Hoyer has secured millions of dollars to clean up the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent, Potomac, Anacostia, and St. Mary's Rivers. Under his leadership, 8,000 acres have been added to the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge and he helped acquire 6,000 acres in Charles County for the Douglas Point Project. Representative Hoyer has earned an impressive 92% score on LCV’s 2023 National Environmental Scorecard.
