Candidate Background

Shomari Figures is running to represent Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Following the values of service and community instilled by his parents, Shomari Figures served under Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Under President Obama, Shomari helped build out teams across the federal government that implemented key Administration priorities, including the Affordable Care Act to ensure Alabamans could access quality, affordable health care. He went on to serve as the White House Liaison at the Department of Justice, and then as a Counsel in Congress, where he served as an advisor on issues including civil rights, immigration, homeland security, child welfare, and policing. After leaving Congress, he worked on the Biden-Harris Transition Team, and then returned to the Department of Justice where he most recently served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Counselor Attorney General Merrick Garland. If elected to Congress, he is deeply committed to implementing policies that address climate change, promote environmental justice, and strengthen democratic processes.
