CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Senator Ron Wyden is running for a third term to represent Oregon in the U.S. Senate. He was first elected to the chamber in a 1996 special election after serving 15 years in the U.S. House of Representatives. Senator Wyden has been a consistent friend to the environment. He has used his positions on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and on the Finance Committee to fight for clean energy tax credits, to combat climate change, and to protect Oregon’s air, land and water. In Oregon, he helped expand wilderness protections for Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge, Copper Salmon, the Oregon Badlands, Spring Basin, the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument and the addition of hundreds of miles of Oregon rivers to the Wild and Scenic Rivers system.

In November 2023, Wyden, along with Senator Whitehouse, launched an investigation into how insurance companies are navigating mounting risks from climate change, including where companies will next pull coverage or raise premiums. This investigation builds on a related investigation the committee launched in June 2023 into the U.S. insurance industry’s decisions to continue investing in and underwriting fossil fuel expansion projects that drive climate change. Senator Wyden has earned a 92% lifetime score on LCV's National Environmental Scorecard.
