CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Senator Peter Welch is currently running for his second term representing Vermont in the U.S. Senate. From 2007-2022, he represented Vermont in the U.S. House, the first Democrat to represent Vermont in the House since 1961. Welch previously served in the state Senate from 1981 to 1989 and from 2001 to 2006, including multiple terms as the President pro tempore, the first Democrat ever in that position. He has been a champion for the environment and addressing climate change throughout his time in public service. Welch is Chairman of the Rural Development and Energy Subcommittee of the Senate Agriculture Committee. He uses this position to highlight the need for sustainable, innovative climate policies in Agriculture. During his tenure in the House, Welch introduced a number of bills to advance a clean energy future and combat the climate crisis, including establishing a national renewable energy standard, accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, to make federal buildings more energy efficient and climate-resilient, a national energy efficiency standard and more. Nine of his bills were included in the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis Democrats’ Climate Action Plan. Many of these priorities were included in the Inflation Reduction Act including - a point of sale tax refund for electric vehicles, $1 billion investment incentives for state and local building code adoptions and $9 billion for homeowner incentives to adopt energy efficient appliances.  Representative Welch has earned a 95% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard
