Candidate Background

Monica Tranel is running to represent Montana's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. She was raised on her family’s ranch in Eastern Montana and is a world-class rower, competing in the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and winning the 1995 World Championship Gold for the United States Women’s Rowing Team. From 2001 to 2005, Tranel served as a staff attorney for the Montana Public Service Commission (PSC) and from 2014 to 2016 worked for the office of the Montana Consumer Counsel, which represents statewide consumer interests regarding utility and transportation issues in hearings before the PSC, state and federal courts and administrative agencies. As an attorney, Tranel has taken on out-of-state billionaires and corporate monopolies to stop them from ripping off Montanans. She stopped a New York Hedge fund from cheating Montana small businesses, and beat out-of-state corporation’s attempts to steal land from local ranchers. Tranel then started her own law firm focused on regulatory issues before the PSC related to energy and utilities, water and property rights, and representing clients who want to invest in clean energy projects. Tranel is endorsed by LCV Action Fund.
