Candidate Background

Representative Mike Thompson is running for an 14th term to represent California’s 4th Congressional District. Thompson previously served in the state Senate. As Co-Chair of the Land Conservation Caucus, Co-Chair of the Wildlife Refuge Caucus and a lifelong outdoorsman, preserving America's natural heritage has always been a priority for Thompson. He strongly supports investing in land conservation, acting to prevent climate change and transitioning to a clean energy economy. As a member of the Ways and Means Committee and the Energy Tax Reform Working Group, Thompson has worked to reform the tax code in order to promote clean energy and energy efficiency, including introducing the Advanced Energy Manufacturing Jobs Act. He has also been a strong advocate for protecting Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, expanding wilderness protections for the northern California Coast, and expanding clean energy production on public lands, co-authoring the bipartisan Public Lands Renewable Energy Development Act.

Thompson wrote the GREEN Act which made the largest investment in climate action that our country has ever seen. The Inflation Reduction Act, signed into law in 2022, contains Thompson’s GREEN Act. Two-thirds of the climate investments in the Inflation Reduction Act — $250 billion worth — rest on the foundation of Thompson’s bill. Representative Thompson has earned a 94% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. Representative Thompson is endorsed by LCV Action Fund.
