CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Senator John Fetterman is serving his first term representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate. The current Lieutenant Governor of the Commonwealth, Fetterman spent over 13 years as the mayor of Braddock. As mayor, he helped rebuild the city using innovate, progressive policy solutions. When a four lane interstate highway was proposed to run through Braddock, which has a population that is more than 80% Black and already suffered historically high asthma rates, Fetterman was the only elected official in Western Pennsylvania who opposed it, calling it out as environmental racism.

In the Senate, he is committed to ensuring we finally achieve environmental justice for every community in America and transitioning to a clean energy future that will create millions of good-paying union jobs. In the Senate, Fetterman is working on legislation to force coal companies to clean up abandoned mines, fought to preserve funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and worked to bring a major new hydrogen hub -- along with thousands of good-paying union jobs in clean energy -- to Pennsylvania. Fetterman has used his position on the Agriculture Committee to push for more funding for conservation in the Farm Bill, and to introduce a bill to promote climate resilient farm practices. Fetterman also supports legislation that combats high gas prices and invests in upgrading infrastructure. Fetterman has never taken a dime from the fossil fuel industry, and he never will. Senator Fetterman has earned a 86% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
