CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Representative Jamaal Bowman is running for a third term to represent New York's 16th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Bowman began his career as a crisis management teacher in a South Bronx elementary school. Since 2009 he has worked as the founding principal of Cornerstone Academy for Social Action (CASA) in the Bronx, one of the top public middle schools in New York. Bowman was a leader in the opt-out movement, a movement against standardized testing that disproportionately harms low-income communities.  He is also a steering committee member of the New York State Allies for Public Education (NYSAPE) and a member of the New York State Early Childhood Blue Ribbon Committee.  Throughout his career in public education, Bowman has been a champion for early childhood learning standards, trauma-informed teaching practices, and social justice curricula. Bowman supports the Green New Deal and moving rapidly to 100 percent clean and renewable energy by 2030. He supports repairing and upgrading our infrastructure, investing in public housing, holding polluters accountable and prioritizing environmental justice and a just transition.
