Representative Jahana Hayes is running for a fourth term to represent Connecticut’s 5th congressional district. Hayes grew up in Waterbury and is a lifelong Connecticut resident. She was a social studies teacher and won the 2016 National Teacher of the Year Award. Hayes currently serves as the Talent and Professional Development Supervisor for Waterbury Public Schools. While her professional experience is in education, Hayes is committed to environmental justice, cleaning up brownfields, and fighting for open spaces, clean air, and clean water. Hayes introduced the Clean School Bus Act and the Clean Commute for Kids Act, which secured $5 billion for clean school bus grants and $7.5 billion for a national electric grid as a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan. As a member of the House Agriculture Committee, she has fought to increase investment in programs that reward environmentally friendly practices. Hayes is a known ally for the environmental movement and will continue to champion pro-climate policies in the U.S. House. Representative Hayes has earned a stellar lifetime score of 98% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. Representative Hayes is endorsed by LCV Action Fund.
