CANDIDATE BACKGROUND 

Deb Haaland is running for Governor of New Mexico. She formerly served as a Congresswoman and as Secretary of the Interior during the Biden Administration. 

During her incredible tenure in Congress and as Secretary, she made history by becoming one of the first Indigenous women elected to Congress in 2018 and the first Indigenous Cabinet Secretary in 2021.

As Secretary of the Interior in President Biden’s cabinet, she helped move historic clean energy investments forward, cleaned up polluted lands, and conserved 41 million acres of lands and waters for future generations. She worked tirelessly for New Mexicans, securing thousands of jobs, historic local clean energy development, and played a pivotal role in protecting 13.5 million acres of land in New Mexico. Deb Haaland also worked to partner with rural communities and Tribal Nations to preserve our natural resources for fishing, ranching, recreation, and water preservation. 

If elected as Governor, Deb Haaland is committed to investing in a clean energy transition and conserving of New Mexico's lands and water. She will work toward ambitious net zero emissions goals, create jobs and an economy that is sustainable for generations to come, and hold polluters accountable.
