CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Cory Booker has represented the state of New Jersey in the U.S. Senate since October 2013. He previously served as Mayor of the City of Newark. Booker sits on the Commerce, Science, and Technology; Environment and Public Works; Foreign Affairs; Judiciary; and Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committees. Since being elected to the Senate, Booker has voted in favor of clean energy tax credits and energy efficiency legislation. As Mayor, Booker had a proven record of implementing environmental initiatives. In 2008, he created Newark’s first Office of Sustainability, which released the city’s first Sustainability Action Plan in 2013. The Office’s programs have expanded the city’s parks and green-spaces, created home weatherization training programs for low income youth, built affordable green housing units, created urban farms and lowered the urban heat island effect through the expansion of the tree canopy.

Bookerintroduced landmark environmental justice legislation and secured millions in federal funding to modernize wastewater and drinking water systems to address contaminants in drinking water, install water filtration systems, and replace lead pipes that poison children. He  is an original cosponsor of the Green New Deal resolution, which commits the United States to a ten-year mobilization to achieve domestic net-zero emissions by 2030.
