CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Representative Becca Balint is running for a second term to represent Vermont in the U.S. House of Representatives. Since 2014, Balint has served in the Vermont State Senate and in 2017, she was elected majority leader unanimously and then selected as president pro tempore of the Vermont Senate in 2020. She is the first woman and first LGBTQ+ person to serve in this role. Throughout her time in the state senate, Balint has received perfect scores on the Vermont Conservation Voters Scorecard. She has helped shepherd landmark climate and environmental justice legislation through the Vermont Senate. In Congress, she supports investments in renewable energy, the Green New Deal, and implementing a tax on fossil fuel companies. She has proposed using the revenue from this tax to help fund initiatives for low-income residents to participate in the transition to clean energy. In the state senate, she supported Vermont’s first environmental justice law, legislation to require the state government to acknowledge the environmental harms endured by underrepresented communities. She is the first woman and first LGBTQ+ person to represent Vermont in Congress. Representative Balint has has earned a 97% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
