CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Representative Adelita Grijalva is running to represent Arizona’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. This is a special election for an open seat in Arizona. 

 Adelita Grijalva is a lifelong public servant, advocate, and resident of Southern Arizona.Beyond her career in elected office, Adelita has had a long history of public service: Most recently, Adelita Grijalva served on the Pima County Board of Supervisors, representing District 5. She was first elected to the Pima County Board of Supervisors in 2020, becoming the first Latina, and only the second woman, to serve as Chair. She was re-elected by the voters in 2024, earning more than 73% of the vote.  During her time as a Pima County Supervisor, Adelita developed a reputation for bringing people together to address the biggest issues facing Southern Arizona including affordable housing, environmental protection and climate resiliency, and healthy and safe communities. Among her key accomplishments as a Supervisor were starting the county’s first free preschool program for low-income families, championing historic investments in affordable housing, and protecting open spaces to ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the beautiful Sonoran Desert.

Adelita Grijalva is an environmental champion and has spent her career working to protect public lands, address climate change and fight for environmental justice. As a Pima County Supervisor, she led efforts to purchase over 7,700 acres of land for open space preservation and state grazing, sponsored a resolution in support of President Joe Biden creating Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument in Northern Arizona, led a resolution affirming Pima County’s opposition to the construction of I-11 through Avra Valley and urging the withdrawal of this route from consideration, and worked with county staff on local efforts to control and clean groundwater contamination by toxic PFAS chemicals. She will continue to fight for our planet and Arizona’s communities if elected to Congress.
