CANDIDATE BACKGROUND
Tim Kaine is running for a fourth term to represent Virginia in the U.S. Senate. A win will help maintain a green firewall and flip control of the Senate. Kaine previously served as Governor and Lieutenant Governor, as well as Mayor and City Councilman in Richmond. In 2006, Kaine put $1 billion into the cleanup of the Chesapeake Bay and Virginia’s rivers. He also established a program to survey air pollution from facilities that had been grandfathered in by the Clean Air Act as part of a comprehensive effort to reduce air pollution.
Kaine also helped pass the historic Inflation Reduction Act, which is estimated to create over 30,000 clean energy jobs in Virginia alone over the next decade. In 2023, Kaine introduced the Offshore Wind Jobs Opportunity Act, which would help support offshore wind job growth. In the Senate, he will continue to fight for the key components of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan and clean energy solutions. Senator Kaine has earned a 97% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
