CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Senator Tammy Duckworth is serving her third term representing Illinois in the U.S. Senate. She previously served two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, is an Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient and former Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs who was among the first handful of Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Senator Duckworth served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2014.

 In the Senate, she co-founded the first-ever Environmental Justice Caucus and served on the Senate Democrats' Special Committee on the Climate Crisis.. Duckworth is working to ensure that programs like the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative continue to help Illinois and the region thrive, while reaching across the aisle to help bring more resources to the Midwest. Duckworth is proud that her bipartisan Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act DWWIA) was signed into law as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in 2021.She has fought to protect the Great Lakes, clean drinking water, invest in clean energy research and bring critical attention to issues of environmental injustice.
