Candidate Background

Representative Richard Neal is running for an 19th term to represent Massachusetts’s 1st Congressional District. Neal previously served as Springfield Mayor and City Councilman. He has been a clean energy champion, in particular the wind production tax credit and has called for expanding passenger rail service. Neal has supported legislation to protect treasured wild places, like the Arctic, Red Rock, the Quinebaug and Shetucket Rivers Valley, and the Blackstone River Valley. He supports efforts to permanently re-authorize and fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and is a co-sponsor of legislation to regulate waste from oil, gas and geothermal production. In Congress, As Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, he held the first Ways & Means hearing on climate change in over a decade.  Neal will continue to advocate for America’s natural treasures and clean air, water, and energy. Representative Neal has a 93% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
