CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Senator Patty Murray is running for her seventh term representing Washington in the U.S. Senate. Senator Murray began her political career as an advocate for education issues before being elected to her local school board and the State Senate. Since winning an open U.S. Seat in 1992, Senator Murray has voted many times to repeal taxpayer giveaways to the oil and gas industry, co-sponsored legislation that would ban offshore drilling along the West Coast, and voted for bills funding alternative energy research and development. Her top legislative priorities include supporting conservation and energy independence, including her Wild Sky Wilderness Act and leading the efforts to designate the Hanford Reach National Monument.

Murray helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)—historic legislation that made the largest ever climate investment in our nation’s history, pushing for the IRA to make it more affordable for families and businesses across Washington state and the country to be part of the clean energy transition, including incentives for rooftop solar, electric vehicles and their chargers, electric heaters and water heaters, and energy conservation. Additionally, Murray secured historic investments in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act for salmon recovery and ecosystem restoration programs and continues to advocate for critical funding to support salmon recovery efforts in Washington state and the Pacific Northwest through the annual appropriations process, working closely with Tribes and local officials. As Assistant Democratic Leader, she is a member of the Democratic Senate Leadership team and the highest-ranking woman in the U.S. Senate. Senator Murray has earned a 92% lifetime score on LCV's National Environmental Scorecard.
