CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Justice Kyra Harris Bolden is serving in her second year on the Michigan Supreme Court and remains committed to ensuring equal access to justice, applying the law without fear or favor, and treating all who come before our state’s highest court with dignity and respect. In her first year, she had the distinct honor of authoring three majority opinions, one unanimous.

Kyra Harris Bolden is a former State Representative in the Michigan House. As a former member of the House Ways & Means and Judiciary Committee, she advocated for Michiganders and focused her work on criminal justice reform, crafting and passing bipartisan legislation to protect survivors of sexual violence.

After becoming a member of the State Bar, Rep. Bolden practiced as a criminal defense attorney, Judicial Law Clerk in Wayne County’s Third Circuit Court and as a civil litigation attorney with Lewis & Munday, P.C., in several practice areas before successfully running for office for the first time in 2018.

Justice Bolden is a member of a number of organizations, and has also received several awards, including the 2019 Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs, Inc. “Young Women Lifting As We Climb Image Award”; 2019 African American Leadership Awards “Emerging Leader Award”; 2020 Michigan Chronicle 40 Under 40 honoree; 2021 Legislative Economic Development Champion Award; and the 2021 Michigan Credit Union League “Legislator of the Year” award.
