CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is running for a sixth term representing New York in the U.S. Senate. He previously spent three terms in the New York State Assembly and nine terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. He became Senate Democratic Leader in 2016 and was elevated to Senate Majority Leader in January 2021. As Senate Leader, Schumer is committed to ambitious action on climate change. He has made clear it is a top priority of Senate Democrats.

Under Schumer's leadership, Congress passed the biggest climate action in American History, the Inflation Reduction Act, which will reduce American greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. The IRS is Congress’s biggest investment ever in tackling the root causes of the climate crisis – carbon pollution — and it makes a real impact in the lives of working families by lowering  energy costs at home and at the gas pump by providing incentives for making homes more energy efficient and tax credits for buying vehicles that run on clean energy, investing in clean energy manufacturing, reducing our reliance on foreign energy sources and transitioning the U.S. to a clean energy economy and reducing American greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, it invests in environmental justice initiatives in communities disproportionately hurt by the impacts of climate change, like addressing the public health effects of air pollution.

Leader Schumer has earned a 93% lifetime score on LCV's National Environmental Scorecard.
