CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Senator Chris Coons was first elected to represent Delaware in the U.S. Senate in a 2010 special election. During his tenure in the Senate, he has been a strong defender of a clean energy economy and a consistent vote for environmental protections. Senator Coons’ has worked on legisaltion that would extend grant programs for clean energy investments and green infrastructure projects. Coons has worked with members of Congress from neighboring states to protect and restore the Chesapeake Bay, and continues to work to sustain the vital role the Bay plays in the Mid-Atlantic region. 

Coons is a leading advocate for conservation programs that help protect wildlife and habitat, water quality, open space on agricultural lands, and access for hunters, fishermen, and other recreationists. Additionally, he is a cosponsor of the Land and Water Conservation Authorization and Funding Act, which would secure permanent funding to protect land and waterways of state and national importance. Coons is also a supporter of the Migratory Bird Habitat Investment and Enhancement Act, which allows for an increase in the price of the Duck Stamp and subsequently greater revenue for conservation programs that protect wildlife habitat across the country. He is also a cosponsor of the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, which supports partnership efforts to protect habitat for waterfowl, fish, and wildlife.
